Spoken word grows.

A new report from Edison Research and NPR shows that spoken word audio consumption is on the rise. The report found that nearly half of all Americans (48%) now listen to spoken word audio on a daily basis, up from 39% in 2014. The average daily listening time for spoken word content at home has also increased, from 27 minutes in 2014 to 41 minutes in 2023. For the first time, mobile devices have become the primary medium for spoken word audio consumption, overtaking traditional platforms like AM/FM radio. Streams now account for 41% of spoken word audio listening at home, compared to 39% for traditional radio. In the car, AM/FM radio still holds the lion’s share of time spent listening, but podcasting has carved out a considerable and expanding segment of the market.
