Radio, the spry centenarian.

We’re going to see a lot of this in the next couple of years, as the stations that started our business celebrate their 100th birthdays. WGN in Chicago, for example, turns 100 in mid-May, and a television special will commemorate the event on sister station WGN-TV. The special is entitled “100 Years of WGN Radio: a Retrospective” and will air on Thursday, May 19 at 7 PM Central, with an encore presentation on Sunday, May 22 at 2 PM Central.

Perhaps less photogenic but just as old, Detroit station WJR is also celebrating the big one oh oh; the official anniversary date was May 5, when, a century ago, the station signed on as WCX. Current Vice President/Market Manager Steve Finateri called the station “iconic,” and called his talent roster “an all-star team at every position in this building.”

And not to be left out, Dallas station WBAP is kicking off a year-long 100th-anniversary celebration with some of the station’s best moments, personalities, and executives.
