Another fine mess.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is penalizing Southern Media Interactive LLC with a $16,200 fine and revoking their FM translator license for WSFN-AM in Brunswick, Georgia. The FCC cited numerous violations, including unauthorized operation, modification, dead air, and transfer of control. SMI lost access to its transmitter site, prompting temporary operating requests. However, an informal complaint revealed the translator broadcasting while the AM signal was off, leading to further investigations. The FCC found SMI had willfully operated WSFN from an unlicensed location, and the translator’s license terminated due to prolonged unauthorized operation. Additionally, SMI transferred control to Shanks Broadcasting, LLC without authorization, affecting programming and financial management. Incomplete responses hindered the FCC’s assessment, prompting the proposed fine and termination of the translator’s license to ensure compliance and address the violations.
