“Virtual FMs” may get second life.

radio-in-tvThe FCC has released the Third Notice of Proposed Rulemaking concerning extending the deadline for analog low-power and translator TV stations to switch to digital transmission. The new proposal would extend what is now September 1, 2015 deadline indefinitely, which has the side effect of extending the life of the so-called virtual FM stations – Channel 6 analog TV stations that are receivable at 87.75 FM. The docket includes other provisions already in place for full-power stations, in service of the FCC’s desire to free up more spectrum for mobile broadband.
