Nielsen pulls the plug.

MediaPost is reporting that Nielsen is no longer going to fund the Council for Research Excellence, an organization of Nielsen clients who are conducting their own research on media measurement and methodology. The research company has funded the Council for a dozen years, ever since its launch in 2005. While some of the findings of the Council were not flattering to Nielsen, the ratings company released a statement saying, “This decision is not a reflection of the organization or its work. Rather, it is based on our desire to bring greater simplicity and focus to our investments in measurement innovation.” Fear not, however, exploration of research methodology is by no means dead: there are several other industry organizations doing it, including the Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement, 3MS, and the Media Rating Council.
