Minority Ownership “Abysmally Low”

In a report released last week by the FCC on the ownership of commercial broadcast stations, whites own nearly 70% of all TV stations and nearly 80% of all AM and FM radio stations—and over 70% of radio ownership is by men.

The report breaks down television but not radio; black ownership in TV declined from 1% to 0.7% between 2009 and 2011. Asian ownership was also down, from 0.8% 0.5%. Latinos and women, on the other hand, showed growth: Latino TV ownership increased from 2.5% to 2.9%, and women’s share went from 5.6% to 6.8%.
