Help:
Setting Up to
Receive SMRN
To read, download and print SMRN via e-mail, here
are the steps:
- DOWNLOAD THE ADOBE ACROBAT READER.
It's free! Go to the Adobe
web site and follow the instructions to download the Acrobat reader. Note: You
will have to install the reader after you have downloaded it; see Step 3 below.
- IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THE ACROBAT READER,
be sure it is Version 3.0 or higher. Older versions might work with some Acrobat-formatted
files out there, but won't work with all (and not ours).
- EXPAND THE ACROBAT FILE. The file
that you download will be a compressed "EXE" file that will have to be RUN to
extract the actual files you need for installation. Move that downloaded file to its own
directory, then run it.
- INSTALL THE ACROBAT FILE. Among
all the files that are generated in the expansion process, two are of concern to you: one
will be called README and the other will be called INSTALL or SETUP. First, read the
README file; that should give you instructions to go on. Basically you want to RUN the
INSTALL or SETUP file, which will set up the Acrobat Reader and link it to your web
browser software so you can automatically read the SMRN file from within your browser.
- READ THE SMRN FILE WITH ACROBAT.
The SMRN file is e-mailed to you as an "attachment" to a text e-mail message. At
the end of the text message is some sort of box (the layout may vary according to what
browser you are using - e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.) that contains the
information about the SMRN file. The name of the SMRN file is the date of the issue plus a
"PDF" extension - as in 990909.PDF. There should be some part of that box (in
Netscape it is called "Part 1.2") that is a different color, and your cursor
will change to a little hand shape when passed over that part.
You can do several things with the attachment. If
you double-click on the colored text, it should automatically open the Acrobat Reader and
display the SMRN file. You can read it onscreen, or print all or selected pages for
reading later; to print, go to File, Print on the Acrobat menu.
If you right-click on the colored text,
it should display a menu that has the option, "Save Link As." This is how you
download the SMRN file to your computer. That way you can use the Acrobat Reader directly
to view and print SMRN (without your web browser). Use File Manager (Windows 3.x),
Explorer (Windows 95) or your desktop folders (Mac) ... locate the SMRN "PDF"
file you want to open ... and double-click on the file name. This will start the Reader
and load the SMRN file.
This procedure is a little involved, but you only
have to do it once! When things are working properly, each week's SMRN is just a
mouse-click away.
