Ex-Radio Funnyman Succumbs

Jonathan Winters, who died last Thursday at the age of 87, began his professional career as a morning DJ on WING in Dayton, Ohio in 1946. He worked another radio gig before moving into television at WBNS-TV in Columbus in 1950.

He moved to New York a few years later, did standup comedy, made commercials, released some albums and appeared in a number of TV shows and movies, including a recurring guest role on “Mork and Mindy,” whose Robin Williams was a fan and protégé of Winters.

His last role was as the voice of Papa Smurf in the animated feature “The Smurfs 2,” which will be released in the Fall.
