Dick Orkin, 84.

The radio legend died over the weekend after suffering a stroke. For most people, the highlight of Orkin’s 68-year radio career was “Chickenman,” which he created and starred in while working at WCFL in Chicago in the mid-60s. The series ended up being syndicated to over 1500 stations worldwide. Orkin also produced and distributed “The Secret Adventures of the Tooth Fairy.” Later, Dick Orkin’s Radio Ranch produced scores of very funny award-winning commercials. Editor’s $0.02: I got to know Dick a little bit a few years ago when he was doing some seminars in conjunction with the RAB. As a big fan of WCFL when he launched Chickenman, I was thrilled to meet the legend. Not only was he incredibly gifted, but he was a very sweet man as well.
