Crystal awards: small market shrinkage.

The 2016 Crystal awards, given to those stations that display exemplary community service, were handed out to 10 radio stations during the Radio Luncheon 2016. We note with some dismay that the number of small-market radio stations recognized is down considerably from previous years: at one time, small market radio represented 40%-50% of the Crystal Awards, but this year, depending on how you define “small market,” we only earned one or two of the 10 Crystals. The winners are

KNDE-FM College Station, TX
WBAB-FM Long Island, NY*
KNX-AM Los Angeles, CA
WCCO-AM Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
KPRS-FM Kansas City, MO
WJBR-FM Wilmington, DE*
KRLC-AM Lewiston, ID
WRLT-FM Nashville, TN*
KTAR-FM Phoenix, AZ
WWJ-AM Detroit, MI

NAB Crystal Radio Award finalists were chosen by a panel of judges representing broadcasting, community service organizations and public relations firms. Finalists were honored and winners announced at the NAB Show Radio Luncheon, where nationally syndicated radio personality Kim Komando presented a keynote address and ESPN Radio’s Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg were inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame. The luncheon was sponsored by ASCAP.
