Broadcasters push back.

As we expected, the National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Television Digital News Association have each issued a statement in response to the president’s tweet about “challenging the license of NBC” because of “all the fake news coming out of NBC and the networks.” NAB chief Gordon Smith said, “The founders of our nation set as a cornerstone of our democracy the First Amendment, forever enshrining and protecting freedom of the press. It is contrary to this fundamental right for any government official to threaten the revocation of an FCC license simply because of a disagreement with reporting of a journalist.” Meanwhile, RTDNA Executive Dir. Dan Shelley bluntly stated, “Today’s call by the president of the United States to challenge the licenses of networks is not only dangerous to the American people’s right to access responsible journalism, it represents a clear misunderstanding on his part of how much control the federal government can exercise as it relates to networks and cable channels.”
