AM revitalization a hot topic.

The comment period for the FCC AM Revitalization initiative, which closed on Monday, was one of the more active comment windows in recent history. The radio industry, represented by the National Association of Broadcasters, supported making it easier for AM stations to obtain FM translators; the NAB’s comments noted that changes in protection for Class B, C and D AM stations’ daytime contours would benefit some stations but damage others. IHeartMedia and several sports franchises argued in favor of skywave protection for Class A stations, while smaller broadcasters argued against it. Other comments, predictably, argued for or against provisions of the initiative based upon whether those provisions helped or hurt the commenting parties.
